  • Legal divorce: ending of the marriage
  • Economic divorce: separating the assets of the marriage with a property division
  • Emotional divorce: two parties grieving the end of the relationship
  • Parenting children in divorce: a fourth facet of some divorces involves “separating parental responsibility” fairly and in the best interest of the children, with an eye to child support and child custody after divorce

Property Division in Divorce

Concerning property division, Texas is a community property state. Texas divorce law states that the divorce court shall divide marital property in a way that is “just and right,” which does not mean a simple 50/50 split. New laws in Texas have opened the door for spousal support (alimony) following a divorce, which can make financial negotiations thorny.

Child Support and Child Custody after Divorce

In the same way, Texas courts rarely divide parental time with children 50/50. One parent will likely be granted exclusive rights, such as the right to determine the primary residence of the children, which can further complicate the negotiation

This is probably an unfamiliar situation for you. Child custody, child support, property division, spousal support, visitation. These are complicated and fraught with twists and turns, the consequences of which are difficult, if not impossible, to ascertain without assistance from a Houston divorce lawyer. This is not a new area for Chris Spofford. He has been doing this since since 1986. He can guide you, counsel you, and stand up for you and your interests in this difficult and trying time.

What Our Clients Say

I found myself in a very messy divorce and needed a good attorney. I searched for Top Super Attorneys and went with one. A short while later I realized that she had her own agenda and I had to fire her. The moment I discovered Chris, I knew that he is the one to carry me through the mess. At the climax of the divorce process was the Psychological Evaluation of me and my spouse. It was evident that the Psychologist had manipulate all the results and came up with solid report recommending to the judge that my spouse should have Sole custody of the children upon the fact that my spouse had exhibited documented Psychiatric issue. With the sound judgment and experience of Chris, in no time he had the Psychologist deposed and rendered her report irrelevant. Long story short, if you really need The BEST or the BEST, Chris and his crew is all you NEED. You cannot get anything better. May God bless Chris, Tristan, Jennifer and Nikki.
